Houston is known worldwide as the capital of the oil and gas industry, but it has received much less attention for its wealth of educational, research and clinical assets in the life and health sciences. Compared to other regions, such as greater Boston and the San Francisco Bay Area, Houston lacks a major biotechnology and pharmaceutical presence. The flip side of this circumstance is that the city has a great deal of growth potential and tremendous opportunities for licensing and commercialization to accelerate the entrance of new drugs, diagnostics, devices and therapies into the marketplace. At the forefront of this untapped wealth is The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Located in Houston’s Texas Medical Center, MD Anderson is one of the world’s largest and most respected centers devoted exclusively to cancer care, research, education and prevention (Fig. 1). MD Anderson leads the nation in grant dollars awarded by the National Cancer Institute, and its cancer clinical trial program is the largest in the nation. Over a 5-year period ending in 2013, clinical trials led by the center’s investigators contributed to US Food and Drug Administration approval of 22 of the 71 drugs approved as new entities or for new indications. It is no wonder that U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” survey has ranked MD Anderson as one of the top two cancer centers every year since the survey began in 1990. As a global leader in clinical care, MD Anderson is a pioneer in the development of new technologies, expertise and research that are helping transform the biomedical healthcare landscape. These capabilities, and the scientists and physicians developing them, are a valuable resource in many government, academic and industry settings.
